Attappadi in Palakkad
Attappady, located in the Mannarkkad area of Palakkad district, is one of Kerala's largest tribal settlements, home to the Irulas, Mudugas, and Kurumbas. These tribes, each with their distinct lifestyles, cultures, and eating habits, live in hamlets known as Oorus, of which there are currently 192 in the region.
The name "Attappady" is derived from the words atta (blood leech) and pad (habitation). Among Kerala's tribal communities, the Attappady tribes are considered the most marginalized. Their economy is deeply rooted in traditional practices centered around the land and forest, which they regard with reverence as manifestations of the divine.
